About Pratham

Pratham Mumbai Education Initiative started in Mumbai in collaboration with UNICEF in 1994 with the mission of “Every Child in School and Learning Well”.

The focus was on making quality education accessible to all children. Our main aim was to create a societal mission for achieving universal pre-primary and primary education in the city of Mumbai.

Pratham began as an organization providing pre-school education to underprivileged children in the slums of Mumbai city. Pratham Mumbai endeavoured to form a tri-partite collaboration amongst government, business and civil society to take forward its mission.

Since then, the organization has grown both in scope and geography and is spread across 23 states, reaching over a million children per year through interventions ranging from language and arithmetic literacy classes to child rights interventions, and more.
